Corp., the world's largest video-game maker, infringed patents for digital-
camera technology and should have to pay $171.4 million, a patent- licensing
company's lawyer told jurors in a federal trial. Attorney Ronald Schutz said
some of Sony's cameras use technology owned by St. Clair Intellectual Property
Consultants Inc. that can display pictures in various formats on both
International Business Machines Corp. and Apple Computer Inc. computers. Sony's
lawyer denied the claim. St. Clair sued Tokyo-based Sony in August 2001 claiming
the Japanese company's products infringe equipment and processes for the
multiple-format images. Schutz said Sony has sold $3.01 billion worth of the
cameras since 1998, and that St. Clair, which owns four patents for the
technology awarded starting in 1992, is entitled to royalties.

American Stock Exchange, the third largest U.S. stock market, wants a judge to
declare that it owns the copyright to software and other intellectual property
relating to a new type of exchange-traded fund. The investment devices are
similar to index mutual funds except that their shares trade continually through
the day like stocks. The American Stock Exchange dominates trading in the funds
and this week won a patent suit against an Illinois company that claimed it had
patented a different type of ETF. Index Furukawa Sues Corning for

Electric Co., the world's No. 2 maker of optical fiber, is suing a unit of its
main rival Corning Inc. for alleged patent infringement. Furukawa filed the suit
at the Tokyo District Court against Corning Cable Systems. Furukawa had a loss
of 101.5 billion yen in the six months that ended Sept. 30 and has seen its
stock slump by 92 percent from its high in September 2000 as demand for
fiber-optic products failed to meet forecasts. Preserving intellectual property
rights is now a main tool for generating earnings said one investor.

System and method for conducting a
time auction
Abstract: A system
and a method of conducting a time-auction among queuing customers is described.
A bid is received from one of the queuing customers and compared with the prices
being offered by the other customers waiting in line. If the bid is higher than
at least one of the prices, the bidding customer is advanced in line ahead of
the customer offering the lower price. The system and method provide a mechanism
for customers willing to pay more to advance in the queue and to move ahead of
those not willing to pay as much. At the same time, the system and method allow
vendors such as service providers, for whose good or services customers are
willing to wait in line, to maximize the price charged for their services at any
given moment. Index

Robot and control method for
controlling the robot's emotions
Abstract: With a
robot and a control method for it, information is read in from the outside,
based on which a particular object is detected, and it is judged upon detecting
the object whether or not the object satisfies given conditions, based on the
judgment results of which a robot generates predetermined actions. Thus, a robot
can be realized that acts naturally like a living thing. Consequently, its
entertaining quality for human beings can be increased greatly.

Implantable fuel cell This invention makes use of an
electrostrictive material to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used
for the production of power within a human.
Powder conveying and
dispensing method and apparatus using traveling wave transport This
invention is a major advance in printing technology by resolving a problem
with "toner clouds".
Embedded Display A material that looks
like paper functions like a display, with excellent contrast. It can be read in
ordinary light and looks just like ordinary paper. It is expected to
revolutionize publishing in our lifetimes, allowing for electronic newspapers
and magazines. A pending patent cover several exciting applications for this new
medium, including intelligent maps, low cost paper brochures with full motion
video display and interactive web pages, cereal boxes with built in games, and
much more. This invention teaches how an ordinary sheet of paper, or a substrate
having the appearance of paper, can contain information related to the document
itself. This might take the form of voice annotation that can be played back on
a host of devices.
