http://in.tech.yahoo.com/030407/137/2362k.html Chipmakers Intel
Corp. and VIA Technologies Inc. on Monday said they have settled a series of
patent infringement lawsuits. The agreement, whose financial terms were not
disclosed, resolves 11 pending cases in five countries involving 27 patents.
Both companies have entered into a 10-year cross-licensing agreement under the
deal. Intel will receive royalties on some of the licensing and has agreed to
temporarily refrain from asserting its patents in other cases.

Boston Scientific Group has signed a licensing agreement with rival RITA Medical
Systems Inc. to end patent-infringement suits over treatments for heart disease
and cancer. As part of the settlement, RITA will pay $2.65 million to the
universities of Kansas and Nebraska, which license patents to Boston Scientific.
The schools will split the cash. Mountain View, Calif.-based RITA will collect
royalties from Boston Scientific on some products to be marketed months after
the agreement is completed, RITA said in a statement. Index Patent

Aharonian is intent on exposing what he says may turn out to be the next big tax
accounting scandal: patent donations. Aharonian, in a recent issue of his e-mail
newsletter, Internet Patent News, decries what he says is the alarming trend of
companies "donating bogus patents to universities and claiming big tax
deductions on their federal taxes." In the last few years, DuPont, Lubrizol,
Eastman Chemical, General Motors and other companies have given away patents
whose values were estimated to total hundreds of millions of dollars. He is not
the only one scrutinizing the practice of corporate patent donations. Several
weeks ago, the Internal Revenue Service issued a new set of guidelines
clarifying what is allowed and what is not. More guidelines are likely to
follow.

Method and apparatus for
identifying an iris
Abstract: The
present invention is a method and an apparatus for identifying an iris that can
compare new identification code with registered identification code regardless
of the slant of the face of a person to be identified because the identification
code produced using a standard line does not influence the slant of the face of
the person. The apparatus provides a photographing part, a standard line
deriving part, an iris extracting part, a code producing part, a code
registering part, and a comparison part. The photographing part photographs an
area including both eyes. The standard line deriving part calculates a standard
line passing through the center of both eyes. The iris extracting part extracts
an iris area on the standard line by luminance distribution. The code producing
part divides the iris area into a plurality of pieces, calculates a luminance
for each piece and codes the luminance distribution of the pieces on the basis
of the standard line. The comparison part compares the identification code
produced by the code producing part with the identification code registered by
the code registering part. Index

Method and composition for
improving sexual fitness
Background: Quality
of life is increasingly valued in today's society. Proper nutrition and
exercise, and healthy sexual function contribute to maintain an overall state of
wellbeing, which can serve to manage stress, maintain a properly functioning
immune system, protect against disease, maintain a positive mental outlook, and
generally to enable one to feel good and enjoy life. It has been found that the
combination of L-arginine, ginseng, and optionally, ginkgo biloba when
administered to a human in combination improves the blood circulation and
improves the sexual, mental, and cardiac health of an individual. The invention
provides methods and compositions for maintaining a state of wellness in an
animal by providing such a dietary
supplement.
Abstract: The invention provides methods
and compositions for maintaining a state of wellness in a human by providing a
dietary supplement comprising L-arginine, alone or in combination with ginseng
and ginkgo biloba and/or additional nutritional supplements. The invention
provides a unique blend of components that, in combination, synergistically
bestow sexual wellness upon a human when taken regularly as a dietary
supplement.

Financial screening system In an
on-line financial screening service, a database of financial and intellectual
property information is searched to find at least one financial security
matching user defined financial search criteria. Selection preferences for a
financial security are defined as search criteria. The databases are repeatedly
searched for records matching the financial selection criteria preferences of
the user. Financial securities meeting the users search criteria are then
matched to an intellectual property database to determine the number of patents
a financial security has been issued
Laptop Display The
invention includes a computer projector in a portable computer or PDA device.
The lightweight, relatively low power display, only adds a few ounces of weight
to the computer. It can project a large image display on a screen or wall. In
several configurations taught by the patent, the LCD and active matrix displays,
a considerable component of the cost of any computer or laptop, are eliminated.
The projection device images onto the laptop cover panel, saving hundreds of
dollars in manufacturing cost. Put the display cover in the projector position
and you can project an image onto a large wall for group
viewing.
