Index ================================================== NEWS Nortel, Redback settle patent suit http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105_2-999047.html Nortel Networks will
license patents to telephone equipment supplier Redback Networks as part of a
settlement announced Wednesday that ends a patent dispute between the two
telephone industry rivals. Redback will pay an undisclosed amount for the
licenses, the two companies announced. Neither company would elaborate on other
terms settling the lawsuit Redback filed two years ago in U.S. District Court in
Oakland, Calif. The tussle was over techniques such as "inverse multiplexing," a
faster way to speed a telephone call through a network. Instead of being sent in
one piece, the call is divided into several pieces and transmitted at the same
time.
Index FTC opens case against Rambus http://www.computerworld.com/governmenttopics/government/legalissues/story/0,10801,80820,00.html Lawyers
for Rambus Inc. are once again in court as the Federal Trade Commission today
opens its case against the memory designer on charges that it deceived a memory
standards organization in order to profit from licensing fees. Rambus has been
involved in numerous lawsuits and trials over its participation in a
standards-setting process for the next generation of PC memory. The Los Altos,
Calif., company believes it's entitled to royalties on the sales of synchronous
dynamic RAM (SDRAM) technology, the predominant memory technology used in PCs,
because products based on that standard use patented Rambus technology. The
SDRAM vendors disagree, challenging the validity of Rambus' patents and accusing
the company of trying to fraudulently influence the SDRAM standards process.
Index Energizer, Eveready file patent infringement complaint http://stlouis.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stories/2003/04/28/daily23.html Energizer
Holdings Inc. and the Eveready Battery Co. have filed a complaint with the U.S.
International Trade Commission alleging patent infringement. The companies named
24 respondents in the complaint, who they say infringed on their patent by
importing and selling certain alkaline batteries in the United States. Energizer
is seeking an order from the commission that would bar all infringing batteries
from being imported into the United States. The companies expect to hear from
the commission within 30 days on whether it will accept the complaint and
investigate.

Apparatus and method for
self-tuning a piano
Background: Traditionally,
an acoustic piano is tuned by a trained technician, schooled in the craft of
piano tuning, who utilizes complex, learned methods. The trained technician
determines when the piano string is in tune by either using a tuning fork or an
electronic strobe tuner as a pitch sensing aid and then systematically tuning
each piano string by manually turning the tuning pins with a special wrench.
This service is usually required at least twice a year and the pianist is
virtually the only modern musician that cannot tune his or her own instrument.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for self-tuning a
piano that includes selectively applying voltage with a voltage mechanism to
each piano string of a plurality of piano strings to provide either thermal
expansion upon an application of voltage or thermal contraction with an absence
of voltage to alter pitch of the piano string to a predetermined value, wherein
each piano string of the plurality of piano strings has a first end portion and
a second end portion, wherein the first end portion of each piano string of the
plurality of piano strings is respectively secured to a housing by a plurality
of first attachment mechanisms and the second end portion of each piano string
of the plurality of piano strings is respectively secured to a housing by a
plurality of second attachment mechanisms and the plurality of piano strings are
electrically insulated from each other.

System for applying gold to the
face skin tissues
Background: The
beneficial therapeutical uses of gold have been known since time immemorial.
Moreover, for more than a decade, the pharmacopoeia has made increasing usage of
the tonic, bactericidal, and regenerative virtues of gold administered orally or
placed under the tongue. Over the last twenty years or so, traditional Chinese
techniques such as acupuncture have become increasingly popular in the West, and
have shown that very thin gold needles inserted into small wrinkles caused them
to noticeably reduce in size and had a remodelling action on adjacent tissues,
providing the face with a long lasting healthy appearance. However, the method
of application is not homogenous and is not suitable for individuals who cannot
cope with needles being introduced into their skin.
Summary: The object of the invention is thus mainly to
provide a system for applying gold atoms in an homogeneous manner onto the skin
of the face with no need for introducing needles. The invention thus concerns a
system for applying gold to a patient's facial skin tissues, comprising a device
generating a single-pole voltage, a mask whereof the internal surface is covered
with gold and designed to be placed on the patient's face by means of a gel-type
fluid which acts as an electrolyte in contact, on the one hand, with the face
skin and on the other hand with the mask internal surface, the mask being
connected to the positive terminal of a voltage generating device, and a
patient's electrode in contact with the cutaneous part of the patient's body and
connected to the negative terminal of the voltage generating device such that
the gold atoms are transferred from the mask to the patient's skin by
electrolysis through the fluid.

Plug-and-play smart data
cable The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of
transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The
cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for
communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up
steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality,
the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication
protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or
downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper
operation.
Financial screening system In an on-line financial
screening service, a database of financial and intellectual property information
is searched to find at least one financial security matching user defined
financial search criteria. Selection preferences for a financial security are
defined as search criteria. The databases are repeatedly searched for records
matching the financial selection criteria preferences of the user. Financial
securities meeting the users search criteria are then matched to an intellectual
property database to determine the number of patents a financial security has
been issued
