Reuters Group has sued its main rival, Bloomberg L.P., in a federal court,
accusing Bloomberg of patent infringement. Reuters, the provider of news and
market data to financial institutions, said in a suit filed in United States
District Court for the Southern District of New York on Friday that Bloomberg
had infringed three patents on Reuters' automated trading technology. The
company is seeking unspecified damages. Reuters, based in London, employs the
technology to enable its customers to trade foreign currencies and other
securities. Last year, automated currency trading generated about £54 million
($88.4 million) for the group. Index Judge Turns Off Water Gun
Patent Suit http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/business/6301571.htm A
federal judge has thrown out a patent infringement case against toy maker Ohio
Art Co. over the design of its water gun. Judge Joseph Irenas of U.S. District
Court in Camden, N.J., ruled that Larami Ltd., a subsidiary of Hasbro Inc., had
not shown that it was likely to win the case and denied a preliminary
injunction. Larami had charged that Ohio Art's A.R.M. 4000 XL water gun too
closely resembled its Super Soaker water guns. "We were confident that there was
no merit to the suit filed by Larami and we are very pleased that we have
prevailed in this case," said Bill Killgallon, chief executive of Bryan-based
Ohio Art.
Index Researchers Beware: Not All "Experiments" are
Exempt from Patent Infringement Suits http://www.genomeweb.com/articles/view-article.asp?Article=2003714164023 When
the US Supreme Court recently let stand a ruling that allowed a university to be
sued for patent infringement, this underscored a message to all research
organizations, universities, non-profit institutes, and corporations about how
to evaluate research plans. The case, Madey v. Duke University, involves a
former Duke University professor who sued the University for patent infringement
when it continued to use equipment that he had patented after he left. The
university argued that it could not be liable for patent infringement because
its uses were for "solely for research, academic, or experimental purposes." The
Federal Circuit, reversing a lower court, made it very clear that this so-called
experimental use defense does not apply to all non-profit research. This
decision flies in the face of the belief that purely scientific research is
exempt from patent infringement. This belief was bolstered by court decisions in
which patent owners were prohibited from impeding the use of their patented
technology in research, particularly non-profit research.

Rotating holographic toy
Abstract: A toy for
producing a three dimensional aesthetically pleasing illuminated image. The toy
includes a handle, a light source, a rotary drive mechanism, and a plate-like
member having an outer surface at least a portion of which is a holographic
diffraction surface. The plate-like member is arranged to be rotated about a
longitudinal axis so that light received by the holographic diffraction surface
produces an aesthetically pleasing illuminated three-dimensional image. The
plate-like member can be mounted so that it moves along the axis with respect to
the handle as it is rotated and can include a transparent sphere containing a
three dimensional object, e.g., a cartoon character, therein.

Interactive control system of a
sexual delight appliance
Background: The
present invention relates to an interactive control system of a sexual delight
appliance, and particularly to an interactive control system, which controls the
sound and allows a sexual delight appliance to make various motions based on the
status of the sound. Furthermore, the interactive control system can remotely
control a far end doll to react a motion through a communication net. Because
the conventional sexual delight appliance mostly is designed for a single person
or for being controlled by another person, it is not possible to offer mutual
actions between a married couple or a loving couple. For instance, if a married
couple or a loving couple are living at two different places respectively over a
long period of time, both of them are unable to have a normal sexual life as
soon as they have sex desire because of their far away from each other. As a
result, it occurs the illegal love affair frequently or consoling oneself
individually, and it is involved in an important reason that the interaction
between the couple is inferior.

Plug-and-play smart data
cable The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of
transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The
cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for
communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up
steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality,
the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication
protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or
downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper
operation.
Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades An
electric shaver includes blades which while rotating around their own centers
also orbit around another axis, thus providing that the blades sweep a large
area.
Implantable fuel cell This invention makes use of an
electrostrictive material to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used
for the production of power within a human.
