The US Court of Appeals on Wednesday gave the go-ahead for patent infringement cases to resume against Palm, Microsoft and Compaq – now part of Hewlett-Packard – and acknowledged that Palm Pilots may have infringed on patents held by E-Pass Technologies Inc. The Court of Appeals issued an opinion last Wednesday reversing a district court opinion. Accordingly the case has now been sent back to the district court to determine whether the devices do actually infringe the E-Pass patent.

Ivax Corp. said Wednesday that Eli Lilly & Co. agreed to dismiss its claim that Ivax is planning to willfully infringe on patents for its top-selling drug. Miami-based Ivax filed with the Food and Drug Administration in 2001 to sell a generic version of Lilly's Zyprexa schizophrenia drug, which had 2002 sales of about $3.69 billion. Lilly, Indianapolis, then sued Ivax, along with India's Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. and Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., which also filed to sell olanzapine, the generic version of Zyprexa.

Plug-and-play smart data cable
The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality, the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper operation.
