Graphics Corp. has agreed to pay $18 million to rival Cadence Design Systems
Inc. as part of a patent-suit settlement, the two electronic design systems
companies said on Tuesday. As part of the settlement, the companies agreed not
to sue each other over certain patented technology for seven years.
Index Nomos and Zmed settle patent claims http://pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stories/2003/09/15/daily54.html Nomos
Corp. said Friday it settled claims of patent infringement with Zmed Inc. The
settlement agreement resolves claims by both companies that the other's products
infringed on their patents, according to Nomos, a developer of technology for
delivering radiation therapy to cancer patients. Nomos said the settlement,
which ends back-and-forth lawsuits filed in Boston, also includes a provision
for the companies to cross-license their patent rights. Zmed, which is in the
same business, is based in Ashland, Mass. Index Patent pirates suffer
wrath of Palco Labs http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2003/September/19/biz/stories/01biz.htm In
a rare judicial ruling, a Miami federal magistrate recommended the incarceration
of two executives for contempt in a case stemming from a patent infringement
lawsuit filed two years ago by Santa Cruz medical device maker Palco
Laboratories Inc. A federal judge has 10 days from Monday to review the case and
determine whether the top executives of VitalCare Group of Miami should land in
jail until they comply with their settlement agreement. "This has been a long
time coming," said James Gale of Feldman Gale & Weber in Miami, who
represents Palco. "The VitalCare defendants have absolutely flouted prior
rulings." Palco is a 24-year-old privately held company that develops and
markets medical products for diabetics, children and clinical lab use, among
other products.

Digital image sequence display
system and method
Background: In a
visual display system that depicts a real world motion scene, many people may
experience motion sickness, or more precisely, simulator sickness. Individuals
experiencing slight levels of simulator sickness may experience some level of
positive effects, such as excitement. However, beyond some threshold, the viewer
may begin to experience a number of negative effects such as light-headedness,
nausea, headache and other undesirable symptoms. It is well understood that
providing conflicting or inconsistent psychological cues to a viewer induces
this particular type of illness. There is a need therefore for an improved
method of generating a digital image sequence that reduces the degree and
incidence of motion sickness in viewers.
Abstract: A
system and method of generating an immersive digital image sequence capable of
providing a perception of self-motion, includes the steps of: generating the
digital image sequence; and adjusting the digital image sequence to control the
perception of self-motion, whereby the degree of motion sickness induced in a
viewer of the digital image sequence is controlled.

Biofeedback based personal
entertainment system
Abstract: A personal
entertainment system calibrated and controlled by the biological or
physiological condition of a user is disclosed. The entertainment system
includes a media player; a sensor operative to detect biological parameters and
generating a control signal in response to the detected parameters, the sensor
being operably coupled to the media player; and a processing element which
associates the control signal to at least one type of media preference, and
causes the media player to provide media stimuli based on the control signal.
Thus the media stimuli provided by the entertainment system is specific to the
individual preferences and detected condition of the user.

Plug-and-play smart data
cable The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of
transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The
cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for
communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up
steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality,
the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication
protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or
downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper
operation.
Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades An
electric shaver includes blades which while rotating around their own centers
also orbit around another axis, thus providing that the blades sweep a large
area.
Implantable fuel cell This invention makes use of an
electrostrictive material to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used
for the production of power within a human.
