Inc., the mobile phone chipmaker, said on Wednesday a Delaware judge denied a
motion by rival Texas Instruments Inc. to dismiss a Qualcomm suit alleging
patent infringement. Qualcomm, which pioneered the technology at the heart of
many mobile phones sold in the United States and Asia, sued Texas Instruments
last year after the company sought to enter Qualcomm's market. Texas
Instruments, the largest maker of wireless chips based on so-called GSM
technology, is now neck-and-neck with Qualcomm for the leading share of the
global mobile chip market. Last year, Texas Instruments began selling chips it
developed based on CDMA, the technology Qualcomm invented more than a decade
ago.

http://www.eetuk.com/bus/news/OEG20040322S0019 Processor licensor
ARM Holdings plc has agreed to pay Herodion, a successor company to PicoTurbo
Inc., £6.4 million (about US$11.8 million) to settle outstanding issues between
the companies. ARM originally sued PicoTurbo over the offer of processors
compatible with a particular ARM instruction set, alleging patent infringement.
The matter appeared to be settled in 2001 when PicoTurbo was wound up and its
chip designs were passed to ARM. Index Versus Technology Files
Patent Infringement Lawsuit http://www.mitechnews.com/technews/bydate.htm?id=10794132000003 Versus
Technology, which provides real-time locating systems using dual infrared and
radio frequency technology, filed a law suit Tuesday against a former business
partner for patent infringement. The suit against Indianapolis-based Hillenbrand
Industries, Inc., Hill-Rom Services, Inc., and Hill-Rom Company and Israel-based
Visonic Technologies Ltd. and Visonic was filed in the United States District
Court for the Western District of Michigan. Versus alleges Hillenbrand and
Visonic infringed on four Versus patents covering passive locator systems. The
company said the technology is used primarily in health care facilities to
track, in real time, the location of personnel and equipment, and to confirm
that emergency calls in hospitals are answered. Versus seeks damages and an
injunction barring Hillenbrand and Visonic from further commercializing the
infringing systems.

Method of doing business by
identifying customers of competitors through world wide web searches of
job listing databases
Abstract: A business
method for identifying business competitors' customers through Web searches of
job listing databases or job boards and company Web sites where jobs are also
often posted directly. Items such as competitors' business names, product names,
acronyms, etc., are used as keywords and the search engine results provide an
index of potential customers who are posting job listings for employees skilled
in competitive products. Once the Web sites and/or Web pages posting job
listings of these potential customers are located, additional information
relative to doing business with said potential customers may be extracted from
such pages and Web sites through "spider" or "Web crawler" routines. Such
additional information may be: the potential customer locations posting said job
listings to thereby identify customer locations using competitors' products; the
quantity of the jobs posted in said job listings to thereby quantify the
potential customers' product needs; or the names, email addresses or phone
numbers of people within the potential customers' company having job needs to
thereby identify potential contacts within the organization.

Pet cage assembly having smoke
activated escape feature
Abstract: A system
and method for freeing a pet from a portable holding cage. A portable holding
cage is provided with a door that can be locked in a closed position by an
electromechanical locking mechanism. The operation of the electromechanical
locking mechanism is controlled by a systems controller. The systems controller
monitors alarm signals transmitted to it from a remote smoke detector. The
transmitted alarm signals can be audible alarm signals, radio alarm signals or
optical alarm signals. Once the alarm signal is received and identified by the
systems controller, the systems controller activates the electromechanical
locking mechanism and opens the door to the holding cage.

Plug-and-play smart data
cable The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of
transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The
cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for
communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up
steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality,
the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication
protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or
downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper
operation.
Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades An
electric shaver includes blades which while rotating around their own centers
also orbit around another axis, thus providing that the blades sweep a large
area.
Implantable fuel cell This invention makes use of an
electrostrictive material to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used
for the production of power within a human.
