In a financial disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday as a prelude to its widely anticipated IPO, Google said that it had been sued in 2002 by Overture Services, which pioneered paid-search advertising and is now owned by Yahoo, which claims patent infringement related to advertisement placement processes. Google said it believed the lawsuit was without merit but cautioned that a loss in court could significantly limit its ability to use a program called "AdWords". Index Leading Electronics Companies Sue SAGEM S.A. for MPEG-2 Patent Infringement http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20040503005865&newsLang=en MPEG LA today announced that several leading electronics companies have filed suit in Dusseldorf, Germany, against Sagem Societe d'Applications Generales d'Electricite et de Mecanique S.A. ("SAGEM") for infringing eleven patents that are essential to the MPEG-2 digital video compression standard, which is used worldwide in digital television broadcasting and DVD. Included among the plaintiffs are Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V., Sony Corporation, Thomson Licensing S.A., and Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC). According to the complaint, SAGEM manufactures and markets set-top boxes that use patent-protected MPEG-2 methods and devices without having entered into licenses with the individual patent holders or a portfolio license that includes these patents offered by MPEG LA. In its advertising and promotion, SAGEM touts the benefit of its products for their compatibility with the MPEG-2 standard. Index ScanSoft files second infringement suit on voice-dialing patent http://www.masshightech.com/displayarticledetail.asp?Art_ID=65557 Peabody’s ScanSoft Inc. has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Israeli company ART Advanced Recognition Technologies Inc. in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. In its complaint, ScanSoft alleges that ART Advanced Recognition Technologies infringes a ScanSoft patent that covers voice-activated dialing for mobile telephones. In the claim, ScanSoft seeks unspecified monetary damages for infringement and injunctive relief to prevent ART from continuing to infringe U.S. Patent No. 6,501,966 “Speech Recognition System for Electronic Switches in a Non-Wireline Communications Network.” ScanSoft filed a similar lawsuit against Voice Signal Technologies in February 2004.
