Google faces legal challenge on ad practices
http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=businessNews&storyID=502515§ion=finance

Google, the world's leading Web search engine, has disclosed that it faces legal challenges over its practice of selling advertising key words, which contributed virtually all of its revenue in 2003, as the company readies an initial public offering of its shares. In a financial disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday as a prelude to its widely anticipated IPO, Google said that it had been sued in 2002 by Overture Services, which pioneered paid-search advertising and is now owned by Yahoo, which claims patent infringement related to advertisement placement processes. Google said it believed the lawsuit was without merit but cautioned that a loss in court could significantly limit its ability to use a program called "AdWords".

http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20040503005865&newsLang=en

MPEG LA today announced that several leading electronics companies have filed suit in Dusseldorf, Germany, against Sagem Societe d'Applications Generales d'Electricite et de Mecanique S.A. Included among the plaintiffs are Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V., Sony Corporation, Thomson Licensing S.A., and Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC). According to the complaint, SAGEM manufactures and markets set-top boxes that use patent-protected MPEG-2 methods and devices without having entered into licenses with the individual patent holders or a portfolio license that includes these patents offered by MPEG LA. In its advertising and promotion, SAGEM touts the benefit of its products for their compatibility with the MPEG-2 standard.

6,730,023 Animal genetic and health profile database management
Abstract:  A system, method, and apparatus is provided for computerized management of the databases relating to phenotypic health assessment and genomic mapping and genetic screening of animals. Multiple remote users can access a computer network connected with a central database processing resource for managing the data. There is appropriate security and payment of appropriate fees for accessing and retrieving data. Users may input data relating to animal health, lifespan, and genetic background, and obtain reports relating to phenotypic health assessment of a particular animal subject or animal group, and genotypic characteristics of a particular subject or animal group to which this subject belongs. The central computer database processing resource stores phenotypic data and genotypic data relating to animals and analyzes their relationship according to predetermined criteria. The input of data and reporting of data is preferably electronic, or through fax or voice communication. The analysis of the health assessment database and genetic database can be automatic and/or in part manually interpreted by experts related to the central database processing resources.

    Plug-and-play smart data cable

The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality, the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper operation.
