Xerox loses single-stroke patent claim against PalmOne
http://www.itworld.com/Man/2687/040524xeroxpatent/

In a patent infringement lawsuit that has survived various rulings and company configurations, a U.S. District Court on Friday ruled that Xerox Corp.'s patent for its Unistrokes single-stroke handwriting recognition software is invalid and as a result dismissed its suit against PalmOne Inc. Xerox had contended that Palm's handwriting recognition technology for PDAs (personal digital assistants) violated Xerox U.S. Patent number 5,596,656, which covers Unistrokes symbols. But for the second time, Michael Telesca, a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, terminated the patent infringement lawsuit.

Monsanto Wins Canola Patent Case in Canadian Supreme Court
http://newstribune.com/articles/2004/05/22/business/0522040033.txt

Canada's highest court sided Friday with Monsanto Co. in a seven-year dispute over technology in farming, giving the Missouri-based agribusiness titan broad rights under patent law to control its genetically engineered crops. The Supreme Court of Canada rejected a Saskatchewan farmer's contention that he was an innocent bystander and should not have to pay for seeds he insists had arrived on his field by accident. The legal battle dates to 1997 when St. Louis-based Monsanto found on Percy Schmeiser's farm a canola variety the U.S. company had engineered to resist its powerful Roundup weedkiller.

Station Casinos gets judgment in Harrah's patent suit
http://www.nola.com/newsflash/louisiana/index.ssf?/base/business-1/108541255160010.xml

A Las Vegas casino company said Monday it won a favorable judgment in a three-year-old patent battle with rival gambling company Harrah's Entertainment Inc. Harrah's filed suit against Station Casinos Inc. in July 2001, alleging Station's Boarding Pass player rewards program violated three patents for technology used in Harrah's Total Rewards customer-loyalty program. Harrah's seeks actual and punitive damages and an injunction against Station. A U.S. District Court judge in Nevada ruled two of Harrah's patents invalid "due to indefiniteness and lack of enabling disclosure of the claimed subject matter," Station said.

PATENTS OF THE DAY
6,742,042 Method and apparatus of presenting ticker information
Abstract:  A communication system includes a packet-based data network that is coupled to various network elements. The network elements include user systems and a service provider system. Each of the user systems may send requests to the service provider system to receive selected categories of information. In response, the service provider system (or alternatively another information provider) transmits the requested information to each subscribing user system, which then presents the information as a ticker. Messaging used for communicating the ticker information may be based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), including Subscribe and Notify messages or Info messages.

6,741,973 Consumer model
Abstract:  A model of consumer behavior in a transaction environment such as customers moving around a bank branch, is generated from an artificial life algorithm to create a number of agents. In each agent, a genetically encoded drive, equivalent for example to hunger, is defined so as to correspond to a transaction need such as the need for cash. Interaction rules, such as navigation rules, are set for interaction between the agents and a first representation of an environment, and the program is run and the agents observed, then compared with real human behavior. The best matched agents are selected and the program run again, the steps being repeated until a required level of comparison with real behavior is reached. The model can then be used with different transaction environments to study customer behavior and to select the best branch layout or the like.

    Plug-and-play smart data cable

The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality, the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper operation.

Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades
An electric shaver includes blades which while rotating
around their own centers also orbit around another axis,
thus providing that the blades sweep a large area.

    Implantable fuel cell
This invention makes use of an electrostrictive material
to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used for the
production of power within a human.
