to settle lawsuits http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2004/07/10/glaxosmithkline_to_pay_92m_to_settle_lawsuits/ Drug
maker GlaxoSmithKline yesterday said it will pay $92 million to settle lawsuits
accusing it of patent maneuvering aimed at protecting its Augmentin prescription
antibiotic. The Boston-based Prescription Access Litigation project brought one
of the handful of antitrust lawsuits filed against GlaxoSmithKline in 2002. The
group, which has filed class-action lawsuits against a raft of drug companies
over marketing and patent allegations, said it will reap $29 million of the
total settlement amount. "This settlement is an important step in the fight to
hold drug companies accountable for their practices, which increase and inflate
the price of drugs beyond the reach of many Americans," project director Alex
Sugerman-Brozan said in a statement. "We hope that other drug manufacturers will
take notice of this case before they engage in similar practices."
Index Semitool Wins Patent Claim Over Novellus http://www.forbes.com/business/businesstech/feeds/ap/2004/07/12/ap1451154.html Chip
equipment maker Semitool Inc. said Monday that it won a key ruling in a patent
infringement lawsuit filed against rival Novellus Systems Inc. in June 2001. On
Jul. 1, the district court for Oregon ruled that Semitool did not infringe a
Novellus patent, and granted a summary judgment of non-infringement. Both
companies have sued and countersued each other regarding several patents in a
case being heard before the district court in Oregon. Index Battery
developer wins $30 million in case http://www.detnews.com/2004/autosinsider/0407/09/b05-206539.htm Energy
Conversion Devices Inc. and two subsidiaries will receive $30 million in
licensing fees from Toyota Motor Co.p. and two other Japanese companies it
accused of patent infringement. The settlement announced Wednesday ends a
dispute that began in 1996, when ECD tried to stop Toyota, Matsushita Electric
Industrial Co. and Panasonic EV Energy Co. from testing hybrid vehicles powered
by nickel-metal hydride batteries that Rochester Hills-based ECD said were
patented by its Ovonic Battery Co. Inc. ECD, which is headed by former General
Motors Corp. chairman Robert C. Stempel, along with Ovonic Battery and Cobasys
LLC, ECD’s joint venture with ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures LLC, sued in
2001 and later agreed to arbitration before the International Chamber of
Commerce. Under the settlement, Panasonic and Cobasys will cross-license current
and future patents to avoid further litigation. No party admitted liability, ECD
said. In addition to patent licensing fees, Troy-based Cobasys will receive
royalties on nickel-metal hydride batteries sold by Matsushita and Panasonic
through 2013.

Method and apparatus for remote
powering of device connected to network
Abstract: A network
node determines the suitability of coupled devices for being remotely line
powered before actually powering them. The node scan its ports to determine
which ports are coupled to devices. The node then interrogates the coupled
devices. A unique discovery tone or bit pattern is generated and sent to devices
coupled to ports. The node then monitors the port for a return signal. If there
is a return signal, it is compared to the transmitted discovery signal. The
signal will be identical after allowing for line losses if the coupled device is
suitable for remote line powering. If the comparison yields a match, the network
node supplies remote line power to the device.

Apparatus for determining dog's
emotions by vocal analysis of barking sounds and method for the same
Abstract: A method
of determining a dog's emotions from its voice with objective supports. The
invention follows the procedures of converting dog's voices into electrical
audio signals, extracting characteristics in a time to frequency component
relation map of the audio signals as a input voice pattern, storing in advance
in memory reference voice patterns for various emotions that respectively
represent characteristics of time to frequency component relation maps,
comparing the input voice pattern with the reference voice patterns, and
determining what a dog feels by declaring emotion of the particular reference
voice pattern showing the highest correlation with the input voice pattern as a
result of the comparison, and emotions represented by the reference voice
patterns include "loneliness", "frustration", "aggressiveness", "assertiveness",
"happiness", and "wistfulness", and hence, the present invention attains an
effective way of determining dog's emotions with objective supports.

Plug-and-play smart data
cable The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of
transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The
cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for
communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up
steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality,
the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication
protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or
downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper
operation.
Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades An
electric shaver includes blades which while rotating around their own centers
also orbit around another axis, thus providing that the blades sweep a large
area.
Implantable fuel cell This invention makes use of an
electrostrictive material to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used
for the production of power within a human.
