Genesis Microchip Wins Patent Infringement Cases Against MStar, MRT and Trumpion
http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20040820005412&newsLang=en

Genesis Microchip Inc. (Nasdaq:GNSS), a world leader in the development of image processing technologies for LCD monitors, flat-panel televisions and other consumer display products, today announced that the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has determined that MStar Semiconductor, Inc., Media Reality Technologies, Inc. (MRT) and Trumpion Microelectronics, Inc. all infringe Genesis Microchip's U.S. Patent No. 5,739,867 entitled "Method and Apparatus for Upscaling an Image in both Horizontal and Vertical Directions." The ITC also issued an exclusion order today preventing the importation of MStar, MRT and Trumpion's display controllers into the United States, as well as LCD monitors and boards containing these products. For the next sixty days, infringing goods may continue to enter the country upon the payment of a bond by the importer. Thereafter, U.S. Customs will block imports of infringing goods.

Novell wins 12-year-long patent infringement charge
http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/0819billings.html

Roger Billings is laying down his decade-long dispute with Novell for allegedly stealing his plans for the LAN. Billings is instead turning to manufacturing hydrogen fuel cells and assuming the mantle of a Mormon-offshoot church, the Church of Jesus Christ in Zion. Twelve years ago in December 1991, Billings, an ex-Utah resident, filed patent infringement charges against Novell, the owner of the NetWare operating system, for $220 million. He claimed that Novell had usurped his idea for connecting machines to a single file server so they could communicate and share files. Billings argued that Novell’s NetWare had caused $62.5 billion worth of damages to his company Billings Computers.

PATENTS OF THE DAY
6,782,115 Watermark holograms
Abstract:  Methods for integrating digital watermarks into holograms, watermarked hologram structures, and related applications. One method creates a watermark image, and then embeds the watermark image into a holographic structure. The holographic structure is created using computer generated holography to create a digital representation of the holographic structure. This digital representation is recorded on a physical substrate using optical techniques or microlithography. As an alterative, a watermark signal is embedded in a physical holographic structure by embedding the signal into an image that is optically merged with the holographic structure as it is optically recorded, or by embedding the signal into an image or physical model from which the holographic structure is formed. Another approach the creates a halftone watermarked image, and forms the halftone watermarked image in the hologram by creating hologram dots corresponding to the dots in the halftone watermarked image.

6,779,296 Mosquito trapping apparatus utilizing cooled carbon dioxide
Abstract:  An insect trap that utilizes a combustion chamber to produce carbon dioxide for an attractant. Combustion gasses from the combustion chamber are cooled in a conduit for the trap inlet. Thus, a single fan may be used for both drawing insects into the insect trap and for cooling the combustion chamber. Combustion gasses, after being cooled by the flow of air through the conduit connected to the trap inlet, may be further cooled by a cooling system, such as a thermoelectric device. As such, the insect trap of the present invention may be used to produce carbon dioxide, via combustion, at temperatures at or below ambient temperature.

    Plug-and-play smart data cable

The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality, the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper operation.

Electric shaver having orbitally moving blades
An electric shaver includes blades which while rotating
around their own centers also orbit around another axis,
thus providing that the blades sweep a large area.

    Implantable fuel cell
This invention makes use of an electrostrictive material
to increase the efficiency of a fuel cell as used for the
production of power within a human.
