http://www.forbes.com/work/feeds/ap/2004/11/12/ap1651487.html

Medical diagnostic test maker Biosite Inc. on Friday said that Roche Diagnostics Corp. has filed a patent-infringement complaint against it in the United States District Court in Indianapolis, sending the company's stock down almost 4 percent. The company said that the claims that it infringed on two patents owned by Roche - one for a biosensor, and a second for a device which separates plasma or serum from whole blood and analyses it - are without merit and that it plans to vigorously contest them.

South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. said Friday it will ask the Japan Patent Office later this month to nullify two plasma display panels patents of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. The move would be in response to the Tokyo Customs' decision Thursday to bar LG-made PDP products from entering the Japanese market for two years. PATENTS OF THE DAY
6,820,060 Apparatus for generating sales probability
Abstract:  A method and apparatus for predicting analytically the probability of closing a sale. The apparatus comprises a general purpose computer having a central processing unit (CPU) and a memory for generating sales probabilities. An operating system and sales probability engine are loaded from a storage medium and executed in the memory. The sales probability engine utilizes various sales information to determine the account control level corresponding to a particular stage of the sales cycle. A sales probability is then derived by applying the account control level and the current stage of the sales cycle as indices to a sales probability look-up table.

    Plug-and-play smart data cable

The invention includes a smart, plug-and-play cable capable of transparently translating between two different communication protocols. The cables are "plug-and-play" such that two devices can be coupled together for communication without the requirement that the user perform any special set-up steps in order for it to work. To implement this plug-and-play functionality, the smart cable of the present invention determines which communication protocols are required at each of its ports, and selects, activates, enables, or downloads the appropriate communication protocol drivers to enable proper operation.
